Data Validation Rules for Asset, Part, and PM IDs

Asset, Part, and PM IDs are critical in the identification, tracking, labeling, searching, reporting, etc of assets and parts. 


Additionally, while names and IDs are not the same, both are critical, especially in terms of assets. It is always a good idea to plan out how you desire to name assets before entering them into the system. See Asset Planning & Naming for more help.


This article describes what characters are allowed when entering IDs. 


  1. Capital alpha letters only (A-Z)
  2. Numeric numbers only (0-9)
  3. No spaces
  4. Certain special characters, though not recommended
    • Percent sign %
    • Dash -
    • Colon :
    • Forward Slash /
    • Dollar Sign $
    • Asterisk *
    • Plus sign +
    • Period .
