Asset family trees are hierarchies to help organize your assets and sort assets into "parent" assets or "children" assets. Parent assets are often larger, or at least major, pieces of equipment, machinery, or infrastructure in your organization. Children are sub-assets that are dependent upon the parent assets, and are often components of the parents assets that ensure that the parent is functioning.
These family trees are often created to show the relationship between parent and children assets based on their operational processes, geographical location/facility, or departmental ownership.
It is important to note that all assets are treated the same within SOMAX's system, meaning that all of the functions you can perform on parent assets can be performed on children assets as well. This includes charging work orders/requests, preventative maintenance, editing, and more.
This article should describe how to view and create asset family trees. For help with naming assets, see Asset Planning & Naming.
Creating Asset Family Trees
In order to start creating and linking your parent and children assets, you must first have your parent and child asset already created. This is where the assets' names are useful, as you will be searching through existing assets to link together. For more help creating assets, see Adding an Asset
- From the left sidebar, select Maintenance and then Assets.
- Select the parent asset you would like to link a sub asset to. If you cannot find your parent asset, check your settings and filters. For more help, see Filtering and Viewing Assets.
- From the left menu, select Children.
- Select Select Children at the bottom left.
- Click the checkbox in the leftmost column of every sub asset you would like to link to your parent asset. You may search for assets by their name by typing in the name filter at the top.
- Select + Add Children once you are done.

Viewing Asset Family Trees
- From the left sidebar, select Maintenance and then Assets.
- Select the asset you would like to view. If you cannot find your asset, check your settings and filters. For more help, see Filtering and Viewing Assets.
- Select Action at the top right, and then Asset Tree Lookup.
- Use the toggle menus to view the different asset trees and find your asset (the one with the checkbox next to it).
Below is a quick video on how to navigate the asset tree lookup:
Note how the first parent asset of the entire tree is in blue, and all of its sub assets are in grey. Also note how all parent assets - whether or not they are first in the tree - have toggle menus attached to them, and the last children assets of the whole tree do not.
